Getting used to hearing aids: the first 30 days
A new hearing aid means your brain meeting sounds it hasn’t heard for a long time. Tips to make the first weeks easier.

When you start wearing hearing aids, it is really your brain that relearns. The hum of the fridge, footsteps or rustling paper may seem too loud at first. This is completely normal and temporary.
Week 1: Start somewhere quiet
- Wear your hearing aids at home, in calm surroundings.
- Start with a few hours a day and increase a little each day.
- Your own voice may sound different; reading aloud helps you adapt.
Week 2: Move on to conversation
- Have one-to-one conversations with family and friends.
- Try watching TV at normal volume, or use the TV streaming option.
- Note down any sounds that bother you.
Weeks 3–4: Busier places
- Gradually try noisy places like cafés, shops and family gatherings.
- Explore the programmes in the phone app.
- Share your notes at your follow-up; fine-tuning makes a big difference at this stage.
Build a care routine
Wipe your hearing aids with a dry cloth every evening, put rechargeable models on the charger and leave the battery door open on battery models. Change filters and domes as recommended. Follow-up visits in the first month are free at Bilim İşitme.
